StampedeLearn From the Pros: You should have only the experienced, professional instructors entrusted with your training. We strongly encourage that anyone learning to ride a motorcycle take a course from PROFESSIONALS. No single course or school can turn a novice rider into an experienced expert – only years of riding, along with dedicated practice, can do that. What we will do is teach you the right techniques and habits, creating a solid foundation to start a long career of riding and learning.

Stampede Driving School offers the following Motorcycle courses:

For those with little or no experience riding motorcycles, the Basic Course is the perfect place to start. Even people returning to the sport after a long absence will find the Basic Course a useful refresher.

In Class Motorcycle Theory:
In the 2 hours of classroom instruction, students are introduced to the controls of the motorcycle and some of the theory behind their operation. Also discussed: bike selection, safety equipment, road, traffic and weather hazards. Perhaps the greatest emphasis is placed on the importance of proper rider attitude. The classroom section concludes with an exam covering all topics discussed. This is a good time for students to have questions answered on a wide range of subjects, as the on-bike portion of the course is devoted mainly to riding.

StampedeBasic:
The first section is concerned with the absolute basics: getting on and off the bike, pushing, parking, starting up and shutting down. This is followed by moving off and stopping, slow-speed riding and shifting up and down.

Skills:
Using exercises which make up the motorcycle license test, students learn techniques needed to execute maneuvers at low and intermediate speeds. Emphasis is placed on smooth machine control. In the process, students are also practicing for their license test.

Emergency:
Techniques for collision avoidance, such as hard braking and swerving, are introduced and practiced.

Motorcycle Training:
Students who are deemed by our instructors to be ready for the road use the school's bikes on a controlled group ride. Rides cover anywhere from 50 to 60km, and virtually all types of conditions beginning with slower, low-traffic residential routes.

StampedePractical Test:
There are two types of practical tests available in Alberta. The practical test includes a road test or an on-lot skill test. A person who has Class 7 licence is required to take a road test. A person who has a Class 5 licence or higher, may take either the road test or an on-lot skills test if on-lot skill facilities are available. Students who have completed the course and wish to acquire their Class 6 license can take their test using our bike.

Motorcycle On-lot Test:
The on-lot skill test is conducted at an approved facility free from other traffic. The examiner will explain, in advance, what is required.

The test will include eight skill manoeuvres:

  • Riding slowly in a straight line at 5km/hr or less
  • Starting on a hill
  • Collision avoidance (Quick Lane Change)
  • Shifting around curves – Accelerating & Decelerating in a Turn
  • Emergency braking
  • Riding in a circle in both direction
  • Making left and right hand turns (Sharp Turns)

Motorcycle Road Test:
The examiner will follow the motorcycle in another vehicle. Directions will be given to the rider in advance or during the test by way of a one-way radio.

The road test will include:

  • A basic equipment check
  • A three manoeuvre skill test which will be described by the examiner
  • A following the rules of the road, proper signalling, correct left and right turns, balance, road position, intersection judgement and speed control.
  • Traffic lights – Flashing green advance phase, Right turn on red light, merging areas
  • Four-Way (or Three Way) Stop, Railroad crossing, Uphill and/or downhill, restricted speed zones.

Basic Course Students:
You will also need to go to the registry and write a Class 6 knowledge test, passing this test will give you a test permit that you will need to obtain your Class 6 license but you can however take the basic course without this permit.

Advance Training Course:
One day course, students bring their own motorcycles.
